Winter 2008During the PDX Snowpocalypse we got a foot of snow.Day one was pretty:
It flurried off and on for several days. Day five there was an hour of sun and most of it melted. Day six it snowed and snowed and snowed (I love the way the camera flash caught the snowflakes in this picture):
Here's the snow gauge and cotoneaster on day seven:
Five inches of fluffy snow with a half-inch layer of ice on top. When I shoveled a path to the birdfeeder I stood some shards up:
We had to thaw the hummingbird feeder everyday. At least one hummingbird was at the feeder constantly, either eating or guarding it. The funniest part was watching the bushtits. They're very tiny and they feed in groups, so when they descended on the suet it was like watching a flock of piranhas. By day seven Eric had to refill the thistle feeder. Here are finches waiting patiently for me to stop taking pictures and making snow-shoveling noises and go inside.
Snowy pines and shed:
On day eight we woke to a foot of snow. When I went out to brush the snow off of the hummingbird feeder, I had an amazing encounter with a hummingbird. The front door is dangerous. The snow gauge is useless.
And the backyard is just snow, snow, snow:
Looking forward to spring.... |
